The forests that now crawl with the insectoid ak'ab were once the training ground of the League of Monster Slayers, a generational club of local teens. Was the League a product of childish imaginations, or did they truly face down the occult? Their clubhouse may hold the answers.

Dialogue

Intro

John Wolf:

When I was a kid, we built a treehouse out of scavenged wood.
Lasted one long summer before the autumn winds blew it apart.
Had time for my first kiss up there. Mm. Sweet as August apples.
The fallen blossom never returns to the branch."
But you only lose what you cling to.
There's a treehouse north of here, built to last decades, solid as the oak it's in.
Kids who built it were part of a club.
Called themselves "The League of Monster Slayers." Without a hint of irony.
Because that's exactly what they were.
See, the window between worlds has always been open a crack on this island.
Things would sometimes slip through.
Kids knew that. They feared it. But they still wanted to fight it.
So they built the clubhouse as a lookout, a library. A base of operations.
Been there for decades, Red tells me.
Kids would grow into adults, pass the torch - and the key - to younger generations. So it went
The League abided, as did the treehouse. Until now.
Forest around the treehouse is alive, and deadly.
I found out the hard way, almost got myself killed.
Seems Ak'ab are particularly fond of that spot. Or they want to keep us out.
Perhaps the kids kept something in the treehouse - something the moths are afraid of.
I wouldn't underestimate the League.
"Before the mountain and by the grace of nature I was allowed to realise: I am only a child."*
Club I was part of didn't fight monsters or practise magic.
But we did practise other things that long, hot summer.
All right, so mostly we just talked about it, into the warm nights.
But that was almost as sweet.

(* John is paraphrasing a poem from 1990 written by present-day zen abbot Shinge-Shitsu Roko Sherry Chayat:

Before the mountain and by grace
of nature
I was allowed to realize "Oh!
I am only a child!"
Tendered by spruce and birds
I saw without my usual defenses
and endless thinking I know
anything or everything
coming between me
and creation.

Journal Entries

  • Tier 1: To learn more about the League of Monster Slayers and what the kids knew, you must first find their treehouse. John Wolf mentioned it being to the north of here.
    • Find the treehouse
    • Enter the treehouse
    • Read the League's initiation ritual
  • Tier 2: The league may have been kids, but they were deeply serious about their club. Their secrets were for members only. A note in the treehouse explained their initiation rite. The first step is to find Deadman's Canyon.
    • Find Dead Man's Canyon
    • Poke a dead body
    • Kill The Body
  • Tier 3: There was indeed a dead man in the canyon, but he wasn't as dead as one would think. The next step of the initiation is to find and take a shortcut to a place the kids called Devil's Fork.
    • Find the shortcut
    • Go to Devil's Fork
    • Kill the Shadowrunner
  • Tier 4: The Shadowrunner is slain. On to the Cave of the Sleeping One to pick a black rose.
    • Go to the cave of the Sleeping One
    • Pick a black rose
  • Tier 5: Despite the obstacles, a black rose was acquired from the cave. The next step is to find the Black Pool and spit in it. Sounds easy enough.
    • Go to the Black Pool
    • Spit into the Black Pool
    • Kill the Filthy Thing
  • Tier 6: The pool was an infested mess and spitting in it only pissed off the Filthy Thing that lurked beneath the surface. Only one task remains on the initiation list: find the God Cave.
    • Go to the God Cave
    • Read the note from the League

It is not coincidence that the will of the Dragon is found in the voice of a child.

In childish terrors are the fates of a hundred worlds. In a child's single-mindedness, events are laid bare to their most secret conclusions. This "League of Monster Slayers" saw the hidden world more clearly than the Templars or Illuminati ever did.

See as a child did; unburdened by false goals or the scrabble for understanding, you will act because you must. Speak as those who rendered themselves mute; actions echo louder than words.

Illuminati.pngIlluminati

Good job joining the boy scouts! I mean, we go through agents like gum, it could be a rewarding alternate career path for you if we cut you loose.

Psyche, you don't get to walk away if we cut you loose.

But this is all good data for the dossier. We'll run the names and see if any of these kids flag for potential use to us. One of he upswings of an occult disaster is the window it provides for denying civil liberties, abduction, stonewalling missing persons reports, etc. Like they say, the children are our future.

All things considered, it's the least disturbing ritual you've uncovered on Solomon Island to date.

We generally frown upon the do-it-yourself confrontation of evil. Even so, our shield cannot be everywhere at once. And in the United States, where Illuminati absenteeism has allowed horror to breed behind every picket fence and astroturf playing field...the ordinary person is left little choice but to confront the darkness.

Yes, another generation with the will to take up our fight is welcome. We should endeavour to provide them a future in which to do so.
