Mission Investigation.png The Big Terrible Picture       Main Mission
REPEATABLE (Recommended Level 38)
The Oxford team had been excavating some interesting things in the temple complex to the northwest. Montgomery believes there is more to this location than meets the eye.
Tier 1
Montgomery had been taking notes throughout the excavation, but his research was interrupted by the dangers of the desert. Follow up on his work and dig deeper into the mystery of this ancient site.
  • Examine Montgomery's map
  • Examine Montgomery's notes
  • Go to the northwestern ruins
Tier 2
Montgomery was forced to abandon the excavation site and flee to the relative safety of the camp. Track down his notes and follow up on his findings. To protect his research, Montgomery used a cipher rooted in Roman history.
  • Find and decipher Montgomery's research notes
  • Perform the Ritual of the Sun
  • Inspect where the beams are pointing
  • Collect the metallic scarab
Tier 3
Completing the ritual revealed a rare metallic scarab. Continue to scour the site and follow up on Mongomery's findings.
  • Find and decipher Montgomery's research notes

Montgomery's notes hint at a conflict between Atenists and the Priesthood of Amun. Perform the ritual as it was intended and find out what it reveals.

  • Perform the Ritual of Days
  • Enter the sealed chamber
  • Collect the metallic ankh
Tier 4
Another ritual and another rare metallic object. Continue to scour the site and follow up on Mongomery's findings.
  • Find and decipher Montgomery's research notes

The third ritual mentions lineage and crude depictions of Akhenaten. These rituals were not the work of Atenist worshippers, but of the Priesthood of Amun, who sought to reveal the truth about the Black Pharaoh, and perhaps hide something from him.

  • Perform the Ritual of Lineage
  • Collect the metallic eye
Tier 5
A chamber has opened behind the statue.
  • Enter the hidden tomb
  • Examine the metallic sarcophagus
  • Place the metal objects on the sarcophagus
Tier 6
The three rituals revealed three objects - keys that unlocked a holographic message that seemed from another age. It was undecipherable as it was important. Perhaps the Oxford scholars will be able to shed light on what you've discovered.
  • Report your findings back to the Oxford scholars
  • Read the rest of Montgomery's research

Walkthrough

There are 6 tiers to this mission.

Tier 1/6

  • Examine Montgomery's map
    • In tent near Montgomery
  • Examine Montgomery's notes
    • Mentions Roman cypher
  • Go to the northwestern ruins

Tier 2/6

  • Find and decipher Montgomery's research notes
    • At (505,1087)
    • CNGU BS GUR FHA - ERYNGRF ABG WHFG GB GUR FBYNE OBQL, OHG GUR GENIRY BS GUR UHZNA OBQL - OVEGU GB ORLBAQ RVTUG SYNZRF - RVTUG FGNGVBAF BA GUR CNGU BS YVSR? NYGUBHTU GUR BEQRE VF ABG JUNG FRRZRQ VAVGVNYYL BOIVBHF...
Clue 1
It appears to be written with some sort of cipher
Clue 2
Montgomery's notes mentioned Roman history
Clue 3
Rotate by 13 is the most common version of this
Solution
The cipher is written in what is commonly knownn as the Caesar cipher using the most common variant, ROT13. Using an online encption/decryption tool (or, doing it by hand) gives you the following:

PATH OF THE SUN - RELATES NOT JUST TO THE SOLAR BODY, BUT THE TRAVEL OF THE HUMAN BODY - BIRTH TO BEYOND STATIONS ON THE PATH OF LIFE? ALTHOUGH THE ORDER IS NOT WHAT SEEMED INITIALLY OBVIOUS ...

  • Perform the Ritual of the Sun
    • Each brazier along the corridor has an encrypted message
    • Pots are numbered here going clockwise, starting with the first pot on the left as you come to them.
  • #1: OVEGU - GUR OEVRSRFG OYNMR
Translation
BIRTH - THE BRIEFEST BLAZE
  • #2: PUVYQUBBQ - BAYL GEHYL SNQRF NSGRE BYQ NTR
Translation
CHILDHOOD - ONLY TRULY FADES AFTER OLD AGE
  • #3: NQHYGUBBQ - FYBJRE OHEA GUNA VASNAPL, SNFGRE GUNA BYQ NTR
Translation
ADULTHOOD - SLOWER BURN THAN INFANCY, FASTER THAN OLD AGE
  • #4: QRNGU - QRNGU VF RIRE CERFRAG
Translation
DEATH - DEATH IS EVER PRESENT
  • #5: VZZBEGNYVGL - BAPR NPUVRIRQ HADHRAPUNOYR
Translation
IMMORTALITY - ONCE ACHIEVED UNQUENCHABLE
  • #6: No Note
  • #7: LBHGU - ARIRE GEHYL RKGVATHVFURQ
Translation
YOUTH - NEVER TRULY EXTINGUISHED
  • #8: VASNAPL - N DHVPXYL QBHFRQ SYNZR
Translation
INFANCY - A QUICKLY DOUSED FLAME
Clue 1
The description of each stage will give you additional hints
Clue 2
You're not going to use all the braziers
Clue 3
For those you do use, remember the first note - "The order is not what seemed initially obvious"
Clue 4
You'll have to figure out which stage the one missing a note represents
Clue 5
The other braziers tell you what the missing one is
Solution
  • First, there are three braziers that you do not use - "Death - ever present", "Immortality - unquenchable", and "Youth - Never extinguished".
  • Second, "Childhood" states that it comes after "Old Age", but there is no "Old Age". The pot with the missing note is "Old Age"
  • The order then is -- Birth, Infancy, Adulthood, Old Age, Childhood
  • Using the numbers given to the pots above (clockwise) use them in this order - #1, #8, #3, #6, #2
  • Inspect where the beams are pointing
    • On top of one of the arches
    • You'll have to jump down from the pathway at (435,1048)
  • Collect the metallic scarab

Tier 3/6

  • Find and decipher Montgomery's research notes

RITUAL OF DAYS - THE COMING FORTH BY DAY - A FOCUSING OF LIGHT UPON DARKNESS. THE PRIESTHOOD OF AMUN DRIVEN UNDERGROUND BY ATENISTS - ENACTS THESE RITUALS IN SECRET - WHY HERE?
  • Perform the Ritual of Days
Clue 1
You have to use the crystal at the top of the stairs first.
Clue 2
You are trying to get the light beam into the doorway below
Clue 3
This isn't a difficult puzzle, but there is no real obvious solution on how to do it either. You just have to brute force it. Keep playing with the crystals on the staffs until you get it in the door
Solution

Use the image below as a reference. You may have to use each staff several times to get it pointing in the right direction.

NOTE: They are not numbered in the order to use them!!

The order you want to light staffs in is 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 11, 6, 10, 7 ... once you have 7 pointing down into the hall. The remainder of the sequence is easy.

RitualofDays.png

  • Enter the sealed chamber
    • Open the door
  • Collect the metallic ankh
    • It's on the floor

Tier 4/6

  • Find and decipher Montgomery's research notes
    • At (449,1100)

RITUAL OF LINEAGE - A PRAYER BEFORE ROYALTY? CRUDE DEPICTIONS OF AKHENATEN - THESE WERE NOT MADE TO HONOUR HIM. CONSIDER THE NAMES - AKHENATEN'S NAME ERASED AFTER DEATH - BUT THAT WAS NOT HIS TRUE NAME A PRAYER TO TRUTH
  • Perform the Ritual of Lineage
    • There are six statues. Each one has a hieroglyphic label
Clue 1
"Crude depictions of Akenhaten"
Clue 2
"But that was not his true name"
Clue 3
To pray, use /pray
Clue 4
Only pray before the statues that are labeled with his real name
Solution.
From the note, these are states of Akhenaten. It also mentions that Akhenaten not his real name. Reading the Wikipedia article you see that his original name was "Amenhotep IV". Using that same article, you can use this table to see which hieroglypics say "Akhenaten" and which say "Amenhotep IV". For each status that says "Amenhotep IV" do /pray before it

It may be all of the status on the right side of the hallway that need to be lit up

  • NOTE: If multiple people are doing this step, even if they are in the same group, they can mess each other up. Best is to have one person do it.

Tier 5/6

  • Enter the hidden tomb
    • Behind the statue at the end of the hall
  • Examine the metallic sarcophagus
    • Click on it
  • Place the metal objects on the sarcophagus
    • Use the sarcophagus and you will place the metallic eye on it

Tier 6/6

  • Report your findings back to the Oxford scholars
  • Read the rest of Montgomery's research
    • In the tent behind them

Ours is not the first age. In all but the unhappiest of accidental universes, it is not the last either.

When Akhenaten abandoned Amarna and focused his energy on the valley, he was seeking to retrace the cataclysmic cycle of ages past. The Priesthood of Amun fulfilled their cosmic role by hiding what is most powerful and precious from the Pharaoh's forces. Yin and Yang.

We, as always, are the third element - the third jewel in which the world will take final and everlasting refuge.

It falls to us to uncover all that doesn't want to be revealed, and to forever bury all that does.

Here's a Big Terrible Picture for you: you being responsible for the world ending and me getting to you before it does.

Were there ages before ours? Sure. Do I need you to wrap your head around that? No.

The Priesthood of Amun went to great lengths to keep certain sites and artifacts from Akhenaten and his followers. The ancient origins of those relics are mind-fucking - unfortunately, they require a history lesson that's totally beyond my PowerPoint.

Bottom line: the priests believed that the current age could end with Aten. Given recent reports surfacing from the valley, it's tough to disagree.

Ciao-ciao

I am familiar with he work of Singh and Montgomery. You may as well know that the existence of past ages has been internally confirmed. However, I should warn you: to stretch the mind back beyond the current age is to invite a cosmic headache. Fine for an academic, but some of us have work to do.

Our primary concerns must remain contemporary. For now, going back as far as the 18th dynasty of Egypt will do.

Akhenaten went to great trouble to abandon Amarna and marshal his resources in the valley. Very ancient secrets are most certainly buried there - ones that the priests of Amun were desperate to keep from the Atenists.

Dialogue

Introduction
Montgomery de la Roche: And Tiye...once the Great Royal Wife...decreed her dais be set down...at the Ankh...
Montgomery de la Roche: Are you getting all this, Arun? Riveting stuff!
Arun Singh: Is "riveting" really the word you're looking for, Monty?
Montgomery de la Roche: At least take a rubbing, man.
Arun Singh: Ah! Hello again. We're getting in a little leg-work while there's a break in the, ah, murdering.
Montgomery de la Roche: I don't know how au fait you are with the reign of Pharaoh Akhenaten...
Arun Singh: Creator of the would-be capital Amarna, dedicated to his one god, Aten. It's out that way.
Montgomery de la Roche: Yes. A very long way out there.
Montgomery de la Roche: Even on its rushed schedule, the city was never completed.
Montgomery de la Roche: It was a vanity project, subject to the whims of Akhenaten's growing megalomania.
Arun Singh: And our man was distracted.
Arun Singh: By the demands of his Atenist religion. And the wiles of his mother, Tiye, the Red Queen.
Arun Singh: She coloured her nails blood red, perhaps even dyed her hair.
Arun Singh: Upper-class Ancient Egyptian women were millennia ahead of the glamour curve.
Montgomery de la Roche: Think of a Lady Macbeth figure by way of Grace Jones.
Arun Singh: Who?
Montgomery de la Roche: Why did Tiye, Akhenaten and their divine cult start a new citadel in this empty place?
Montgomery de la Roche: What brought the Romans here, decades on?
Montgomery de la Roche: I venture the answers are still carved under sand.
Tier 6
Montgomery de la Roche: Fascinating Stuff.
Montgomery de la Roche: You could do a lecture tour off this. Really, you're putting us to shame.
Arun Singh: Not that we're strangers to scandalising the academic community.
Montgomery de la Roche: Oh, you.
Arun Singh: This does fit with the Big Terrible Picture theory.
Montgomery de la Roche: You know how I feel about that name.
Arun Singh: It is only a theory, Monty.
Arun Singh: Sorry. The BTP posits that we, the collective we, mankind, have forgotten more than we ever learned.
Arun Singh: For centuries, man has discovered objects much older than recorded history.
Arun Singh: Not even the immortals still understand how these antiquities are operated, their purpose, how they are manufactured.
Montgomery de la Roche: They become the stuff of myth and legend.
Arun Singh: The work of deities and devils.
Arun Singh: Our civilisation never seems to stray far from these things.
Arun Singh: This is why we can dig up a city underneath every city.
Arun Singh: We're creatures of habit, repeat offenders.
Arun Singh: You may be thinking "where does the 'terrible' come in?"
Arun Singh: If this theory holds, something must keep throwing out the toy set every time we finish building it.
Arun Singh: Leaving us to... spend an aeon... Arrgh. Finding all the pieces... Hmmgh. And putting it back together. Ah!
Arun Singh: Scrabbling in the dust for answers.
Montgomery de la Roche: And instead...finding more questions.
