Reputedly the greatest vampire hunter of the Romany people, Mircea Mirga, was said to be a dhamphir, the offspring of a union between a vampire and a human. The story goes that Mircea had a prosthetic tongue made of blessed silver, a tongue that could sing a lullaby that sent vampires back to their crypts to slumber. Perhaps that silver tongue still has power over the hungry dead.

The notion of a dhampir, the child of a vampire and a human, has often been exploited by con artists. Someone enters a village, recently plagued by strangeness or sickness, claiming to be a dhampir, claiming to have the power to not only destroy the undead, but to see the invisible fiends. The con writes itself, culminating in a mimed battle. But in the case of Mircea Mirga, the fiction becomes the truth. He was a great hunter of the hungry dead. Did he start out as such? Did he begin a hustler, only to become something more. Fiction can become the reality. We pretend to be, and then we are. We can pluck solid things from the ether. We are mutable beings, limited only by the identity patterns we wear.

Relics of power, taken from the tombs of dead dudes, is a reoccurring meme in history. Fun fact: King Tut’s phallus went missing. It was there when they first discovered the mummy…and then it wasn't. Who took it? Why? Is there some occultist out there conducting rituals with a mummy dick? And all you got was a little tongue.

We are no strangers to the power of relics taken from the crypts of the righteous. By all accounts, Mircea Mirga was a fearsome slayer of the undying scourge. Would that we could have him in our ranks today.
