Non-player characters, more commonly known as NPCs, are game created and controlled characters who cannot be directly controlled by players. NPCs have a specific rather than generic name and often fill some form of game play function, usually outside of combat. They provide services, request help, tell and are part of stories, and give life to the game world.
Those characters who are generically named and assist in combat are allies. Those generically named characters who are hostile to the character are foes, enemies, mobs or monsters.
