These Acronyms, Abbreviations, Terms, and slang are in general sorted into 3 basic groups - "MMO-related", "Generic Online", and "Other TSW". There is obviously a lot of overlap between the groups, but it should also be somewhat obvious what terms are in which group.

The terms are alphabetical. But, using the browser's "find" feature (ctrl+f) may be the quickest way to find something if it is not a main glossary word.

Acronyms and Terms


  • 10.x.x (example: 10.4.4)
    1. A shorthand version of expressing the Quality Level (QL) of a Weapon or Talisman and also the Glyph attached to it. QL 10.2.4 would therefore mean the equipment QL is 10.2 and the glyph is 10.4.
    2. It can also be used to represent the QL of all the equipped gear on a character.

  • 6/6
    1. 6 of 6 bosses - Typically used in LFG or LFM to indicate that all 6 bosses of a Dungeon Instance is going to be attempted. Also the dungeon they are referring to should be included also. This is most often used when forming groups for Nightmare dungeons.


  • +
    1. Ready - Typically used as an affirmative after someone has asked if everyone is ready for something (Boss fight, entering a Dungeon, after Group members have been AFK, or some other action). A variant of "R".


  • Add
    1. Additional - Monsters that accompany a boss, or that spawns during a boss fight.
  • AE
    1. Area of effect - See AoE
  • Afflicted
    1. A TSW term for a player or creature under the effect of a DoT. For more information, see the main page Afflicted
  • AFK
    1. Away From Keyboard - Used to indicate that you will be away from the keyboard and therefor unable to react to in game occurrence. Typically indicates a longer break than BRB or Bio. Commonly followed by a period of time to indicate how long they expect to be gone
    2. Away From Keyboard - Often a command that can be issued so that the game will automatically respond to others or otherwise indicate that the user is currently "AFK" but expects to be back after a short enough duration that it was not worth logging out of the game.
  • Aggro
    1. Aggression - Used to define when a monster begins attacking, typically upon players performing a certain action or when coming within a certain range of the monster. (As in, "It will aggro when we enter the room").
    2. Aggression - Used to define who is currently on the top of the monster's Hate list and is currently attacking. (As in, "Bob has aggro" - ie the monster is attacking Bob).
    3. Aggression - Used to define Hate mechanisms the monster uses to determine who it should be attacking. (As in, "This ability causes double the normal aggro" - compared to the amount of Hate a similar ability would normally generate).
    4. Aggression - Used to indicate that something outside of the game is pulling the players attention away from the game. "Wife Aggro", "Girlfriend Aggro", "Baby Aggro", etc.
  • AH
    1. Auction House - Term to indicate place where one may purchase items put up for sale by other players.
  • AO
    1. Anarchy Online - An MMORPG released in 2001, by Funcom - the same developers as for TSW - it is one of the longest running MMO's and still played today.
  • AoC
    1. Age of Conan - An MMORPG released in 2008, it was the previous title released by Funcom (the same developer as for TSW)
  • AoE or AOE
    1. Area of Effect - Indicates that an ability has effect around the caster or point of impact. Both players and monsters can have AoE abilities. AoE can be further described by where the area appears at - see TAoE, PBAoE, #GTAoE. Additionally, there can be different shapes an AoE can appear as - see Chain, Cone, Column
    2. Area of Effect - Is also used to indicate the default shape of an Area of Effect ability - a 360 degree circle centered on whatever the initial target of the ability was ( TAoE, PBAoE or #GTAoE) as opposed to other possible shapes of an AoE ( Chain, Cone or Column)
  • AP
    1. Ability Point - A TSW Term for character points that are gained through XP, and are spent to buy Abilities
  • AR
    1. Attack Rating - An important stat for DPS, a major factor in determining the damage done.
    2. Assault Rifle - One of the 9 available primary weapons
  • ARG
    1. Alternate Reality Game - A game that takes place in a both a real world setting as well as online, with the premise that the "Real World" portion of the game is taking place in an alternate reality.
      • TSW is considered an ARG in some respects because it uses fake web pages on the real internet, Facebook missions, and other components in the real world.
  • Avatar
    1. Avatar - The graphical representation of a player in the game. Similar to PC


  • B
    1. Back - Short for "Back", Used to indicate that one has returned from a period away from the keyboard.
  • BG
    1. Battle Group - Used in PvP, the various servers in TSW are split into two Battle Groups. When queuing for PvP zones, you will queue with members from other servers that are in your battlegroup
      • BGA = Battle Group "A" - Includes these servers: Arcadia, Cerberus, Grim, and Drac
      • BGB = Battle Group "B" - Includes these servers: Daemon, Kobald, Leviathan, and Huldra
  • Bio
    1. Bio Break - Indicates that the required break is of a natural nature (toilet, etc). May be used alone, or used after BRB or AFK to indicate why they are leaving the computer.
  • BIS
    1. Best In Slot - Used when talking about equipment and gear to indicate what is the best item for specific slot (weapon, head talisman, etc)
  • Blind
    1. Blind - A form of CC that makes it more difficulty for the enemy to hit friendly units. This could be complete blindness (seen by a black screen from the players point of view), partial blindness, or a penalty to hit that doesn't affect the player's view of the screen but does affect the character's ability to hit it's target. It often lasts for a period of time. For stopping abilities from being used (as opposed to making them less likely to hit) see #Silence, for stopping a single ability use see Interrupt, for stopping all actions see Stun
  • Blitz
    1. Blitz - Most likely a shortened and stylized version of "Blitzkreig" - meaning "Lightning War". Used by someone in an MMO to indicate that they are planning on rushing the objective as fast as possible, avoiding as many fights and obstacles as possible, and plan on skipping all optional content.
  • Block
    1. Block - A type of "Damage Mitigation" defense in TSW that tries to reduce the amount of damage that is done to a player before that amount is applied to the players health.
  • Boss
    1. Boss - A monster that is stronger than ordinary monsters and that typically has added mechanics / abilities requiring special tactics and adaptation. Typically found in dungeons but may also be used to indicate special monsters found elsewhere.
    2. TSW also uses it to indicate a discrete difficulty rating a monster might have, regardless of where encountered.
  • BRB
    1. Be Right Back - Used to indicate that a player is leaving the screen for a short while (getting glass of water, toilet, etc). Typically for a shorter duration than AFK.
  • BS
    1. Breaching Shot - A TSW term for the Breaching Shot ability, often referenced because of the group-wide buff it gives.
    2. Bull-Shit - A rude term for calling something a lie, unfair, or not right. Included here as context will have to be used to determine if the speaker is referring to "Bullshit" or "Breaching Shot"
  • Buff
    1. Buff - A beneficial spell or ability that increases your Stats, Abilities, Damage, Defenses, etc. This could be something you've applied to yourself, friendly units can apply to others, gained from the use of an object, or an environmental effect. The opposite of Debuff
    2. Buff - A change to game rules or mechanics that make an ability, item, or skill more useful/powerful/desired after the change. The opposite of Nerf.
  • Burn
    1. Burn - A tactic to focus on and inflict as much damage or DPS onto an enemy in the shortest time possible, often ignoring adds or other elements whilst doing so. Can also be a suitable time to case or a call to cast group buffs such as Short Fuse, Breaching Shot and Deadly Aim to further increase group damage output.
  • Burst
    1. Burst Damage - A play-style or character build that emphasizes dealing large amounts of damage in a single attack or in brief combos. Compare: DPS.
    2. Burst Attack - An Ability category: single-target attacks that do damage by hitting multiple times in rapid succession.


  • Camp
    1. Camp - A command to log off the game (/camp). Traditionally coming from fantasy based MMORPGs where it was said the character was "Making Camp" when they logged off.
    2. Camp - To wait at a known spawn point for a mob in order to be able to kill it when it does appear.
    3. Camp - Equivalent to Farm
  • CD
    1. Cool Down - Some abilities have a limit on use requiring a pause of an arbitrary period of time before they can be used again. This period of time is refereed to as the "CD" on the skill/ability.
      • Managing the various CD's of your skill set is essential in order to be a good player. Since CD's make certain skills unavailable for a period of time the player must create an order in which to activate the various skills to best utilize the selected skills. This order is sometimes called a "Rotation"
    2. Cool Down - Some Instances or Missions may have a timer associated with them before you are able to re-enter or re-run them.
  • Chain
    1. Chain - A "shape" an AoE can appear in when cast. Not a traditional geometric shape, but in the same group as those that are - Circular, Cone, Column. A Chain AOE is almost always a TAoE and rarely a PBAoE, it almost never targeted as a GTAoE. Chain AoE abilities can be either attacks or healing abilities. They will first take effect at the person they are targeted at, and will then jump to the next closest appropriate (friendly or enemy) target. The distance a Chain AoE can jump to it's next target, and the number of times it can jump is variable and typically explained in the ability description.
  • Channel
    1. Chat Channel - A subset of the in-game chat that users can subscribe to, or are automatically subscribed to by the game. Some channels have are created for a specific purpose (Trade, Looking-for-Group, Help, etc). Some are to create private channels for a specific group of players (Party Chat, Guild Chat, Faction Chat, level-range-based, etc). Some are regional a limited to a specific zone. Some games let you create your own private channels (TSW does, see Chat). Some let you subscribe and unsubscribe to any channel (to a zone you're not in, to a level-range you've not in, etc).
    2. Channeled Attack - A specialized form of a DoT attack, that requires to you to attack for the entire duration of it. Typically a spell that must be cast for the entire duration, but other examples could exist. If the character is unable to continue the attack (out of range, out of line of sight, etc), then the enemy quits taking damage even if there was time left. The character typically cannot take other actions (or at least not make other attacks) while using this channeled attack. This is opposed to regular DoTs that are placed once on the enemy and continue to run their course regardless of the initial caster's actions.
      • NOTE: In TSW, this kind of attack is called a "Focused" attack rather than a "Channeled" attack.
  • Character Sheet
    1. Character Sheet - A term from Pen-and-Paper games where character Stats where recorded on sheets that could then be referred to as necessary. In MMORPGs it servers a similar function, showing character Stats. The game may use this as a read-only sheet that players can refer to in order to see how changes in abilities or equipment effect their Stats, or it may also be used to allow players to increase their Stats when they are able to do so.
      • TSW uses 3 pages for a complete "Character Sheet". The main "Character Sheet", the "Ability Wheel", and the "Skills" page. See the main article Character Sheet for more details.
  • Charge
    1. Charge - A type of ability where the caster will move towards their target extremely rapidly and then stop. This may or may not be followed up by an automatic attack upon stopping. This is different from a Dash in that a Dash moves the caster a fixed distance, regardless of their current target, and a Charge stops at the target. Dash is usually in a fixed direction as well, where Charge is often any direction in front of the caster. Additional, Charge does not affect anything along it's path and goes direct to the target, as opposed to Dash which often attacks enemies along the path.
  • CLI
    1. Command Line Interface - As opposed to GUI. Commands you type in, rather than clicking on an icon. In MMO's, typically a command starting with a "/" slash character and typed into the chat box. "/emote" or "/reloadui" or "/reset" as examples. See Commands for a list of CLI commands available in TSW.
  • Column
    1. Column - A "shape" an AoE can appear when cast. As opposed to Circular AOE, Chain, or Cone shaped. The column AoE is typically a 2-dimensional column on the ground, affecting everyone standing within it. But, it may also be used to refer to a cylinder shapped attack that takes 3-dimensions into consideration. A Column attack almost always uses PBAoE for targeting, normally starting the same direction the caster is facing and extending out from there. Although it may extend from other facings if the caster is able to attack in multiple directions. A Column AoE almost never uses TAoE or GTAoE for targeting.
  • Cone
    1. Cone - A "shape" an AoE can appear in when cast. As opposed to Circular AOE, Chain, or Column. The Cone AoE is, as it name suggests, typically considered to be cone shaped. Although it may also be used to describe (depending on the complexity) a simple be a 2-dimensional triangle area on the ground, a triangle on the ground that extends vertically (up or down) or a true cone shape. A cone attack almost always uses PBAoE for targeting, normally starting the same direction the caster is facing and extending out from there. Although it may extend from other facings if the caster is able to attack in multiple directions. A Cone AoE almost never uses TAoE or GTAoE for targeting.


  • DAOC
    1. Dark Age of Camelot - An [#MMORPG | MMORPG]] released in 2001 that gets mentioned on the | TSW Forums frequently.
  • Dash
    1. Dash - A type of ability where the caster will move extremely rapidly in one direction (usually forward, sometimes backwards, rarely in other directions) for a set distance. A dash is most often an attack, also considered a Column attack, affecting any enemies along its path, although it could be used in non-combat situations as well. A Dash differs from a Charge in that Dash moves the caster a fixed distance, whereas Charge moves the caster to their target and then stops. See also the page for Dash abilities
  • DC or DCED
    1. Disconnect - A term for losing connection to the server so that the character ceases to be in game. DCED is the past-tense version, often used when the player returns to explain what happened.
  • DD
    1. Damage Dealer - Equivalent to the group-role version of DPS
    2. Direct Damage - Damage that is applied to the target instantly (as opposed to DoT)
  • DDO
    1. Dungeons and Dragons Online - An MMORPG relased in 2006 that was the first to use an "Active Combat System". TSW is compared to "DDO" as TSW combat is a simpler version of an "Active Combat System"
  • Debuff
    1. Debuff - A harmful spell or ability that reduces your Stats, Abilities, Damage done, Defenses, etc. This could be something that has been applied by an enemy, an object, or an environmental effect. The opposite of Buff.
  • Ding
    1. Ding - Used in games that have discrete leveling systems (and so unlikely to be seen in TSW with its hybrid leveling system]]). Used to indicated that one has progressed to another level. In some games this may be an automatic announcement made to players, or it may be something a player announces in chat when it occurs. In games with many levels it is customary to only ding on "significant levels (10, 20, top level, etc), significance is game dependent.
  • DLC
    1. Downloadable Content - Optional game content that can be purchased. Typically introduced after the game is initially released, and smaller than a full expansion pack. In TSW - Each of the major updates (1.6, 1.7, 1.8, etc) is called an "Issue" and will typically contain new DLC. See Updates (Patch Notes) for a list of current updates and information about any DLC released with them.
  • DMG
    1. Damage - Abbreviation for Damage
  • DOT or DoT
    1. Damage Over Time - Damage that is applied to the target in specific increments over a fixed period of time.
      • In TSW having a "DoT" is also referred to as the target being Afflicted
  • DPS
    1. Damage Per Second - A unit of measurement for damage output. (see also rDPS and mDPS)
    2. Damage Per Second - A player in a group who's primary purpose in a Group is to damage monsters. As opposed to Healer, Tank, CC, or Support roles.
  • Drop
    1. Drop - Somewhat equivalent to Loot, but typically used when referring to specific items that a monster may leave behind as Loot (As in "This monster sometimes drops a sword I want").
  • Dungeon
    1. Dungeon - Equivalent to Instance. The term "Dungeon" is typically used more often in Fantasy MMORPGs whereas Instance is a more generic term and used more often in genres other than fantasy. See also Instance.


  • Elite
    1. Elite - In TSW it is used to indicate Instances that have had their difficulty increased to be greater than normal. This is the middle difficulty level of Instances, harder than normal but not as difficult as Nightmare.
  • End Game
    1. End Game - Ingame content tailored for players that have completed main story, fully geared up a character and/or (in certain games) reached the maximum Level.
  • ERP
    1. Erotic Role-Play - A form of RP focused on "Adult Content"
  • EULA
    1. End User License Agreement - That wall of text that pops up when you first run the game (and often after updates or patches). The majority of it is Lawyerese, but of note is anything pertaining to what players can or cannot do with their character. Naming rules, language restriction (cursing, insults, etc), what is considered bannable offenses, etc. Typically never referred to unless someone gets banned or gets a warning from the GMs for doing something that violates the EULA.
  • Evasion
    1. Evasion - A common form of defense for a character, or monster, that tries to prevent damage from being taken by completely avoiding being hit.
  • Exp
    1. Experience - See XP


  • Farm
    1. Farm - To Camp at a known spawn point, or spawn area, for an extended period of time, repeatedly killing the same monster(s). Typically done for either gaining the XP for killing them, gathering Mats they drop, gathering the money and Loot they drop, or when looking for a specific item they are known to drop, but only do so rarely and so must be killed repeatedly until it does appear.
  • F2P
    1. Free to Play - A form of MMORPG subscription where there are no monthly fees for the basic playing experience. Typically games that have this form of "subscription" have additional paid services that enhance game play for those willing (or able) to pay for the added benifits. Content in these games may also be limited so that only players who have paid for that content can experience it - this may be zones, Instances, or characters Levels.
  • FC
    1. Funcom - The Developer of TSW, AO, AOC among other games.
  • Fear
    1. Fear - A form of CC that causes enemies to run away from the caster. Typically used to force Adds to run away for a few seconds and not damage Group members for a period of time. Note: Some games use a mechanic they call "Fear" that causes an enemy to stop what it's doing for a period of time, but this is technically a Stun rather than a true "Fear" ability
  • FPS
    1. Frames Per Second - A unit of measurement for how quickly images are displayed on your screen. For a video game - 30 FPS is considered the minimum at which movement and animation looks good. Lower FPS introduces more blur and choppyness, around 15-20 FPS movement starts to look obviously choppy, and below that it becomes disjointed. Higher FPS makes movement even smoother and more natural looking, around 45-50 any further improvements are typically unperceptible, and many monitors wont display anything faster than 60.
      • Your Frame rate can be seen in TSW with the keystroke CTRL+ALT+F
    2. First Person Shooter - a type of game where the players viewpoint is through the eyes of the playable character. Examples of such games are Doom, Halflife, Modern Warfare, etc.


  • Game Master
    1. Game Master - Originally in Pen-and-Paper games it was used to refer to the person who was controlling the game, typically created the storyline, and made any hidden mechanics decision/roles needed.
    2. Game Master - Currently used in MMORPGs to refer to an administrator or representative of the company running the game. Typically seen in game when assisting players with some technical problem.
  • Greed
    1. Greed - A common method for determining who is awarded Loot is the Need / Greed system. If the Loot being rolled on is not an upgrade (more powerful) to your current gear or appropriate for the role you are playing in the Group ( DPS, Healer, or Support) then it is expected you would roll "Greed" on the loot role. See also Need.
  • Griefing
    1. Griefing - The act of doing something in game that interferes with the ability of other players to play or to enjoy playing the game. This can include just about any action, speech, or harassment. While officially against the License Agreement for playing the game, it is often very difficulty to prove that another player has engaged in "Griefing".
  • Grind or Grinding
    1. Grind - A repetitive task done in order to achieve some goal. Typically a series of tasks with minimal enjoyment for doing the tasks themselves, but desired because of the end result. Farming the same monsters over and over until they Drop a specific item may be an example of "Grinding".
  • Group
    1. Group - Up to 5 players who have teamed up, typically to achieve a specific goal such as completing an Instance or run missions together. Also known as a "Party" in other games, TSW prefers the term "Group". See also Raid which is multiple groups joined together.
  • GTAoE
    1. Ground Target AoE - An AoE that appears at a certain spot on the ground, regardless of where the caster or enemies are. As opposed to TAoE or PBAoE. The target location is typically selected by the caster when they click on the spot where they wish it to appear. A Targeting Reticle is often used by the game to assist the caster with selecting where to place the GTAoE. GTAoE are almost always Circular shaped AoE and is almost never Chain, Cone, or Column shaped.
  • GUI
    1. Graphical User Interface - The controls and displays on the screen that players use to interact with the game and their character. See the main article GUI for an explanation of the gui used by TSW.
  • Guild
    1. Guild - A group of players in a game who have banded together under a common name. The Guild typically has a private chat channel for members to use for communication, and may include other features such as a shared bank, a private Instance (Guild Hall or Guild Housing), shared guild-wide buffs for example. In TSW, a guild is officially referred to as a Cabal.


  • Hate
    1. Hate - Often used as an interchangeably with Aggro. But, in the strictest sense - this is an internal (typically hidden) calculation that the monster uses to decide who it should currently be attacking. The player with the most "Hate" will be the one the monster attacks, and if a different player does something to cause them to have more "hate" in the monsters calculations, then the monster will switch to attack the new player. "Hate" tends to indicate internal monster calculations whereas Aggro tends to indicate the what the players see as a result of those calculations.
  • Healer
    1. Healer - A traditional MMORPG role for a player in a Group who's primary purpose is to heal the other players of damage they have taken. One of the three major group roles, along with DPS and Support.
  • HF
    1. Hell Fallen - An Instance in TSW, see the main page Hell Fallen for more details
    2. Have Fun - Term for well wishing. May often be used along with GL as well.
  • HP
    1. Hit Points - Generic term for a measurement of health or the amount of damage that can be taken before dieing (or becoming unconcious). HP is often used to refer to this measurement regardless of what the in-game term is (Health, Hit Points, Stamina, Life, etc).
  • Hindered
    1. A TSW term for a player or creature under the effect of a Root or Snare. For more information, see the main page Hindered.
  • HoT
    1. Heal Over Time - An ability, or it's effect, that heals a friendly player or character for a set amount over a fixed period of time. As opposed to a direct heal, that heals for a set amount once and then is done.
  • Hug
    1. Hug - Means that everyone should group up tightly together at one spot. It may be used to indicate a person in the Group (typically the Tank or Healer) that the rest of the party should stay next to, or a location or landmark that the players need to remain next to. Sometimes it simply be a direction (As in "Hug right along this road").


  • IC
    1. In-Character - Used by players participating in RP to indicate their character is doing or saying something they would do if a real person
    2. In-Character - Used by players participating in RP to indicate that they expect other players to make their characters act as if they were a real person. Often used to describe an event or speech allowed in a chat channel.
    3. IC - The name of a custom chat channel in TSW used to communicate In-Character by players participating in RP
  • Impaired
    1. A TSW term for a player or creature under the effect of a Stun. For more information, see the main page Impaired
  • Instance
    1. Instance - Is an area of an MMORPG that is created each time a player or Group enters that area. A separate copy of that area is created for each player/group that enters it, keeping players/groups from interacting with others in different copies of that area. These "Instances" are often referred to as "Dungeons" but it may be used for uses other than "Dungeons". See Instance for more details about instances in TSW
  • Interrupt
    1. Interrupt - A form of CC that is used to stop, or "Interrupt" a monster when it is in the process of using certain abilities. Most often used while an enemy is trying to cast a particularly powerful ability so that the interruption will cause it to not be cast, forcing the enemy to wait until that ability is available for use again before trying again.


  • Kite or Kiting
    1. Kite - A combat tactic of fighting monsters while also continuously running away from them, often in a circle. The goal of this tactic is to be able to take on monsters you could not normally kill in face-to-face combat by remaining out of their attack range (so they can't do damage to you) while continuously doing damage to them. The method typically relies on Snares to slow down the enemies movement speed and DoTs to continue to do damage to them even when out of your normal attack range.


  • L2P
    1. Learn To Play - Mild insult meant to insinuate that the other player needs to learn basic game play.
  • Lag or Lagging
    1. Lag - Used to describe poor response from the game when your Latency is is very high.
  • Latency
    1. Latency - Describes how fast your computer talks to the server and how quickly the server responds to your computer. Low latency is good, high latency is bad. Latency is measured in ms (Milli Seconds). At 1000 ms it takes approximately one second from when you push your button till the character on your screen reacts. Poor (high) latency is referred to as Lag. Latency is also known as Ping.
  • Leash
    1. Leash - A restriction on the movement of monsters in a game. Typically it means they are tied to particular spot, and can only go so far away from that spot. When they reach their "leash" length from their original spot they will either return directly to that sport or continue to wander within the area allowed by their leash (depending on how the developers have set up that monster). Most monsters in MMO's are "Leashed", and this is often relied up when running through an area and Training monsters. The expectation being that the leash will cause them to quit chasing the player and return to their start position before the monster can kill the player.
  • Leech
    1. Leech - Refers to the Leech mechanics in the game.
    2. Leecher - A player or role that utilizes Leech abilities to heal allies and damage enemies at the same time. A skilled Leecher can still effectively take the role of a Healer in dungeon and raid groups while adding additional DPS to the boss encounters.
  • Level
    1. Level - An indicator of how powerful or useful an item is compared to other similar items.
    2. Level - An indication of how difficult a monster or Instance is, often used to determine if a character or Group should attempt to kill that monster or complete that Instance.
    3. Level - An indication of how powerful a character is. Characters generally gain "Levels" after certain amounts of XP is gained.
      • In TSW "Levels" are not used directly, but used to determine when characters are granted AP and #SP
  • Lewt or Lewtz
    1. Loot - "Leet Speak" term for Loot
  • LFG
    1. Looking for Group - Used to indicate a desire to join a group for some specific in game occurrence (dungeon, quest, etc). (see also LFM)
    2. Looking for Guild - Used, rarely, to indicate the desire to join a guild ( Cabal in TSW terms). Typically with additional information to distinguish it from "Looking for Group"
  • LFM
    1. Looking for Member - Used when in a group and needing additional members to complete the group. (see also LFG)
    2. Looking for More - Equivalent to "Looking for Member"
  • Loot
    1. Loot - Treasure. Probably short for "Looting the Corpse".
  • LOS
    1. Line of Sight - Some monsters will not attack unless they could logically see your character. And, some attacks/abilities/affects will not work unless the caster has line-of-sight with the target. Nearly all games use this to some extent - You can't attack a monster you can't see, monster's won't attack until you step around a corner, etc. Some use it it to a greater extent - if you step behind a tree an incoming attack is blocked, you can crouch and hide behind boulders, etc.

    1. Materials - Components used for crafting to create items.
  • mDPS
    1. Melee DPS - A DPS) weapon or ability that deals damage only when in close proximity to it's target. (see also DPS and rDPS)
    2. Melee DPS - A player in a group whos primary purpose is to damage monsters while up close to them. (see also DPS and rDPS)
  • MMO
    1. Massively Multiplayer Online - see MMORPG
    1. Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game - A game that is open to many people and where the playing of the game is dependent on an online connection (connection to internet or similar). MMO and MMORPG are for the most part interchangeable. MMO seems to be a more common abbreviation, whereas MMORPG is often used when people are trying to make a point about "Role-Playing" being part of the game.
  • Mob
    1. Mobile - A term from MUD games to indicate NPCs or monsters that were "Mobile" instead of stationary. Currently used as an equivalent for "Monster"
  • MT
    1. Miss Tell - Indicates the message the user posed beforehand was meant for a different chat channel and that it should be disregarded.
    2. Machine Tyrant - The name of the 6th boss in the Hell Raised dungeon. It is referred to often due to it's relative difficulty to most other bosses in the popular 18s and 24s dungeon runs.
  • MU
    1. Meet Up - A feature of TSW that allows you to teleport to a point in the game close to the person you are meeting up with.
  • MUD
    1. Multi User Dungeon - Text-based, multi-player, online games. Predecessors to the contemporary MMORPG, who were originally referred to as "Graphical MUDs".


  • Need
    1. Need - A common method for determining who is awarded Loot is the "Need" / Greed system. If the Loot being rolled on is an upgrade (more powerful) to your current gear and appropriate for the role you are playing in the Group ( DPS, Healer, or Support) then it is expected you would roll "Need" on the loot role. See also Greed. Rolling "Need" on items that are not a direct upgrade for your chosen role is considered very rude and can result in you being kicked from the party, labeled as a "Ninja" looter, and general given a bad reputation.
  • Nerf
    1. Nerf - Believed to refer to NERF brand toys because they are "soft and useless weapons". It refers to changes in game mechanics or rules that make an ability, item, skill, or other game element underpowered or useless after the change. Making the ability/item/skill more useful/powerful/desired is referred to as Buffed.
  • Newb
    1. Newbie - A person that is new to the game and just learning how to play
    2. Newbie - A derogatory term for someone that has failed to apply some basic element of game play.
  • Nightmare
    1. Nightmare - In TSW it is used to indicate Instances that have had their difficulty increased to the hardest level possible. This difficulty level is harder than Elite which in turn is harder than normal.
  • Ninja
    1. Ninja - To "Ninja" is to take loot that the player is not entitled to (or at least, that other players feel that player was not entitled to). Depending on the mechanism used to determine how loot is distributed, this is typically caused by abusing the Need / Greed system.
  • Noob
    1. Newbie - Alternative spelling for Newb
  • NPC
    1. Non-Playable Character - An in game character that is neither a player nor an attackable monster. These are typically found as givers of missions, vendors, or just standing around in cities.
    2. Non-Player Characer - Equivalent to "Non-Playable Character"


  • <div="Oneshot">Oneshot or Oneshotted
    1. Oneshot - The act of killing or getting killed by one single hit.
  • OOC
    1. Out-of-Character - Used by players participating in RP to indicate what they are doing or talking about is something the player is saying or doing that their character in game would not normally say, know, or do. Especially when communicating in channels that are normally expected to be IC.
      • This is often indicated in in-game chat channels that are expected to be RP-only by the player placing their text in <> or <<>> symbols
    2. OOC - The name of a custom chat channel in TSW used to communicate Out-of-Character information by players participating in RP
  • OP
    1. Original Poster - Used on forums to indicate the person that started a discussion thread.
    2. Over Powered - A term describing a skill or power that is inproportionately powerful compared to similar skills.
    3. Over Powered - A player or Group that is much more powerful than the monster, situation, or instance they are in, make it a very easy encounter.


  • Party
    1. Party - See Group for the TSW equivalent to "Party"
  • Pat
    1. Patrol - A warning that a Patrol monster is approaching. Either to move out of its path, or to be able to engage it before moving on to the next fight.
  • Patrol
    1. Patrolling Monster - Monsters that walk around an area, typically in a fixed pattern.
  • PBAoE
    1. Point Blank AoE - An AoE that appears centered on the caster of the ability. As opposed to a TAoE or GTAoE. Officially a PBAoE may be of any shape - Circular, Chain, Cone or Column. But it is typically used when describing Circular AoE effects since Cone or Column AoE's almost ways start at the caster and don't need additional classification and Chain rarely start at the cast but are instead typically TAoE
  • PC
    1. Player-Character - Avatars under the direction of players. As opposed to avatars/characters not under the control of any players NPC
    2. Personal Computer - Not often used in game terms, but a technical reference that may be confused with the "Player Character" definition of PC (or vice-versa) if not enough context included.
    3. Politically Correct - A term used in forums/chats to indicate that someone is trying to phrase something in a way that no one could be offended by
  • Pew Pew
    1. fighting sound effects - The sounds of lasers firing in early online game (source unknown), it has come to mean "Lets go fight" or "Fighting", often in a PvP setting.
      • "Less QQ more PewPew" - Quit Crying/Complaining/Whining/Talking, and start fighting.
  • Ping
    1. Ping - Equivalent to Latency. The term comes from "ping test" used to send a packet to a remote device (server) and see how long it takes for that packet to return. The faster the packet returns, the better.
  • PST
    1. Please Send Tell - Used to indicate that more information is available by using the ingame "whisper" or "tell" function (direct person to person chat).
  • PUG
    1. Pick Up Group -- Used to describe a group of players that typically does not know each other and that has assembled by responding to requests to group ( LFM or LFG) in open chat channels. Also applies when some of the group knows each other (in the same Cabal, etc) and the rest of the members are taken from general chat channels to fill out the group.
  • PVP or PvP
    1. Player vs. Player - Content where the main objective is players battling other players
  • PVE or PvE
    1. Player vs. Environment - Content where the main objective is players battling the environment (monsters)
  • PVM or PvM
    1. Player vs. Monster - Content where the main objective is players battling the environment (monsters). Equivalent to PVE


  • QL
    1. Quality Level - A TSW term used to indicates the "Level" or "Power" of an item. Generally the higher the "QL" of an item, the more powerful it will be. See the main article Quality Level.
    2. Quality Level - A TSW term used by lower-level players to indicate the average "QL" of the gear they have equipped. Typically used when advtersing LFG or LFM on chat channels, when looking for a Group for an Instance. Not typically used for high level players since they all have the same (highest) gear equipped.
  • QQ
    1. Quit - Used to tell another player to "Quit and Log off". Originated with the game Warcraft, where the keystroke Alt+Q+Q was to quit and log out.
    2. Crying - Used to tell another player to quit crying or complaining. Evolved from the "QQ = quit" when the letters were mistaken as emoticons for crying eyes.
      • "Less QQ more PewPew" - Quit Crying/Complaining/Whining/Talking, and start fighting.


  • R
    1. Ready - Typically used as an affirmative after someone has asked if everyone is ready for something ( Boss fight, entering a Dungeon, after Group members have been AFK, or some other action).
  • Raid
    1. Raid - A group of Groups that share various in-game mechanisms such as being able to see each others stats on the GUI and a common chat-channel. Typically formed when the objective is harder than a single group of players could handle.
    2. Raid - An [#Instance | Instance]] that is configured to allow a raid-sized group of players to enter it, and is intentially designed to require that many players in order to defeat it.
  • rDPS
    1. Ranged DPS - A DPS) weapon or ability that deals damage from a distance. (see also DPS and rDPS)
    2. Ranged DPS - A player in a group whose primary purpose is to damage monsters from a range. (see also DPS and rDPS)
  • Reset
    1. An indication to reset the dungeon or raid boss by having the entire group or raid party kill themselves (see wiping or by causing the boss to lose aggro of all members. This will usually cause the boss to respawn will full hitpoints.
  • Rez
    1. Resurrect - Short for Resurrect, with a leet z added instead of the s. Games typically have 2 methods for resurrection - 1) Resurrect at a special designated location (med center, holy site, shrine, etc) or 2) You must run from a special designated area (graveyard, shrine, etc) within the game world as your ghost/spirit/anima to the location here you died in order to resurrect there. The Secret world uses both methods - your Anima form appears at an Anima Well and you can either resurrect there by "using" the well, or you can run to your bodies location and resurrect when you get to it.
  • Root
    1. Root - A form of CC that causes the target to be frozen in place and unable to move. Note that it does not keep them from using any weapons or abilities, only from being able to move. Compare to Snare which only slows down the targets movement rate or Stun which keeps the target from taking any actions at all, including movement.
  • RP
    1. Role-Play - Acting ingame as the ingame character rather than a player-controlle avatar.
      • Certain servers (for instance Arcadia in TSW) are designated "RP" servers. Players on that server are expected to conform to general "rules" (i.e. that players make their characters act as part of the ingame world rather than player controlled avatars) - or at least are willing to tolerate and play along with it.


  • Silence
    1. Silence - A form of CC that is used to prevent enemies from using certain sets of abilities. Typically it is used to prevent the enemy from casting spells or using special abilities but does not stop them from moving or doing regular attacks. This may not be literally "Silencing" an enemy, and the description for the in-game effect may change, but the effect remains the same. This effect typically lasts for a period of time. For stopping a single ability of an enemy see #Interrupt, for stopping all actions of an enemy see #Stun
  • Snare
    1. Snare - A form of CC that reduces the targets movement rate. Often used when Kiting monsters. Compare to Root which stops their movement completely and Stun which keeps them from taking any actions.
  • SP
    1. Skill Point - A TSW term for points that are gained through XP gain, and can be spent to buy Skills
  • Spawn
    1. Spawn - The creation of a monster within the game/world
  • Spawn Point
    1. Spawn Point - Location in the game/world where a monster Spawns
  • Standing in Fire
    1. Standing in the Fire - Means not reacting to enviromental hazards. A common term derived from older games where a boss (usually some form of dragon) would cause fire to appear within the fight area and players would need to move out of the fire in order to avoid taking damage. This may not always be "Fire" but could include any varity of hazard - either static environmental hazard, or persistant AoE's created by monsters.
  • Stat
    1. Statistics - The numbers used to calculate what a character or monster is able to do. Some of your character's "Stats" are displayed on your Character Sheet and some are hidden "Stats" that can only be inferred or must be calculated from known values. Examples of stats would be Strength, Stamina, Defense Rating, Chance to Hit, etc. Which stats used are dependent on the game being played.
      • TSW Breaks stats down into "Offensive", "Defensive" and "Healing". See the full article on Character Sheet for more details.
  • Stun
    1. Stun - A form of CC that makes the target unable to take any actions at all. This includes attacking, using abilities, or movement. Compare to Root which stops them from moving, but leaves them able to take other actions.
  • Support
    1. Support - One of the three primary Group roles, along with DPS and Healer, that a player in a Group can fill. This role can typically be broken down into three sub-groups:
      • "Damage Mitigation" who focus on keeping the rest of the party for taking damage ( Tanks would be in this group)
      • "Damage Support" who focus on helping the party do more damage to enemies
      • "Specialized" who fill other uses and are typically unique to the game system they are in. (Lock Picking, Runspeed buffs, etc)
      • In TSW - Tanks are often considered a unique role rather than support, and the term "Support" is typically used to mean "Damage Support" via various abilties that Buff other Group members to allow them to do more damage.
  • SWL
    • Secret World Legends - The name of the game upon its re-release in 2017. Also see TSW.


  • Tank
    1. Tank - A specialized form of the CC branch of the Support role in a Group. It is given its own name, and often considered a unqiue role on its own, because the majority of MMORPGs require a party to have at least one member of a Group filling this role in order to survive and succeed at major fights. The "Tank" version of CC is charactertized by having mechanisms for controlling or influencing the Aggro calculations of enemies in order to force the enemy to attack them rather than other players in the Group. They typically also have some method for being able to survive prolonged attack from multiple or stronger monsters, although they may rely on a Healer for help with this. See DPS, Healer and Support for the primary Group roles.
  • Tank and Spank
    1. Tank and Spank - Means that fighting this monster only entails one player ( Tank) keeping the monsters Aggro while rest of the party is killing it, and that there are no advanced or complicated mechanisms or tactics to deal with.
  • TAoE
    1. Targeted AoE - An AoE that appeares centered on the target that it is cast on. As opposed to a PBAoE or #GTAoE. A TAoE is generally either a generic circular AoE centered on the target or a Chain AoE jumping from target to target. It is very rare for it to be Cone or Column shaped.
  • Targeting Reticle
    1. Targeting Reticle - An image, or icon, that often shows up on the players screen when using a GTAoE ability. So-called because the appearance is often similar to that of the targetting reticle used for a rifle scope. It will typically indicate where the center of the GTAoE will be as well as the extent of the AoE. Used to help position the GTAoE for the best effect - either to try and get the most number of monsters within its area, or to try and cover a choke point to make it difficulty for enemies to get through.
  • Threat
    1. Threat - An equivalent to Hate.
  • Train
    1. Train (noun) - A group of monsters chasing someone. This often happens when a player runs past some monsters, and they Aggro on the player, but instead of stopping to fight, the player continues running - expecting to be able to out run them, or for them to be Leashed before they can kill him.
    2. Train (verb) - To intentionally bring a group of monsters to an area where other players are. Done with the expectation that those monsters will either aggro the other players, or at least disrupt what they are doing. Training intentionally, is considered at the least very rude behavior and is often a bannable offense (although proving it was intentional can be difficult).
  • Trash Mob
    1. Trash Mob - A version of Mob who poses little threat or danger to a group, typically while in a dungeon or instance - when handled correctly. "Trash Mobs" mainly exist to either slow characters down between bosses or to act as a kind of "environmental hazard" if inadvertently engaged at the wrong time.
  • TSW
    • The Secret World - Abbreviated form of the game name. Refers to the classic / originally released version of the game. Also see SWL.


  • Weakened
    1. A TSW term for a player or creature under the effect of a Debuff. For more information, see the main page Weakened
  • Wipe
    1. Wipe - When the entire group dies. Sometimes used to indicate a failed attempt at something. If used in a question context the player is asking whether the group should indeed wipe. Wiping generally resets instanced raid or dungeon bosses.
  • WTB
    1. Want to Buy - Used to indicate that the speaker wishes to buy a certain item, service, or other. Typically followed by just what it is they're wanting to buy. See also WTS and WTT.
  • WTS
    1. Want to Sell - Used to indicate that the speaker wishes to sell a certain item, service, or other. Typically followed by just what it is they're wanting to sell. See also WTB and WTT.
  • WTT
    1. Want to Trade - Used to indicate that the speaker wishes to trade somethey they have but cannot make use of, for something of similar value that they can use. Typically followed by what it is they have to give away and what it is they're wanting in exchange for it.
  • WW
    1. Win Win - Refers to the ability Win Win.


  • XP
    1. Experience Point - "XP" an arbitrary unit that many games use to track characater progression an advancement. "XP" is used to determine when character progression should occur
      • Level System - After enough "XP" is acquired, the character gains a level and relevent Stats or Abilities are increased automatically
      • Character Point System - Points are spent directly by the player on whichever Stats or Abilities they player desires. These are often refered to as "Character Points" and the term "XP" is not used at all in games using this system.
      • Hybrid System - These systems use "XP" and characters gain Levels just like the Level System. But, at each level players are given "Character Points" to spend. There may or may not also be automatic Stat and ability increases at each level as well.
      • TSW uses a Hybrid system. "XP" is collected until a Level is gained and then the player is granted a Character Point to spend. It is somewhat unique in that there are two sets of levels - One for Ability Points and one for Skill Points - even though they use the same "XP" value. There is no automatic Stat or ability advancement - players decide on all advancements.
        • Also note: TSW preferres to refer to itself as a leveless system (even if not technically correct) and so pointing out otherwise may not be well received.


  • Zerg
    1. Zerg - Used in PvE settings as an equivalent to Blitz
    2. Zerg - Used in PvP settings to indicate a plan to overwhelm the enemy using sheer numbers, "Quantity over Quality". Originally from the game StarCraft where Zerg were a playable race that typically used very large numbers of relatively weak creatures to overwhelm enemies.
  • Zone
    1. Zone - A section of the game world. It could be as small as a building, or as large as a continent or even a world, depending on how the game world is laid how and how the developers have to subdivide it for technical reasons. Instances could also be considered a zone, although in typical usage "Zone" is used for areas persistent to all players and "Instance" is used for areas that are created and destroyed as needed for a small group.
  • Zoning
    1. Zoning - The act of moving from one Zone to another. In most games, this requires a pause in the game, typically with a "loading screen" being displayed while the game loads necessary resources for the new zone.

Acronyms, Terms, and Slang used online

These terms, acronyms, and slang may be encountered anywhere online, and are not specific to online-games, but are listed here because they may often be seen in Online Game forums or chat windows.

Please NOTE: The internet being what it is, some of these terms may be considered rude, derogatory, or offensive. Inclusion in this list is not meant to condone or encourage their use, but merely offered as a translation for when players see them.

    1. 10-Character Minimum - Used on forums when replying with an extremely short response, but the forum requires at least 10 characters in a response. This is used to pad the response to the required 10 characters.
    1. As Far As I Know - Used in sentences when posting some bit of information that you think is correct, but are not positive about. It is generally something you are less sure of than when using IIRC.
  • ATM
    1. At The Moment - Used to indicate a point in time that is occuring right now. Usually accompanied with an activity.
  • BRT
    1. Be Right There - You heading to the indicated location and will be there shortly. Often used with or in place of OMW
  • BTW
    1. By The Way - Used preceding random or gratuitous comments.
  • CBA
    1. Can't Be Arsed - An expression of lazyness. Often used with something that that would have been done if the speaker wasn't "CBA"
  • EPeen
    1. Electronic Penis - A persons Ego or Arrogance when online. Used to indicate that their epeen/ego/arrogence needs "attention" or to be "stroked" in order for the person to feel good about themselves.
  • FAQ
    1. Frequently Asked Questions - A help guide used by many online sites, forums, games, etc. Typically used to display the most commonly asked questions so that 1) the ask-er does not have to read an entire manual to find an answer and 2) the site support staff do not have to answer the same questions over and over again.
  • FFS
    1. For Fucks Sake - Typically an expression of irritation or annoyance over something stupid someone does.
  • FML
    1. Fuck My Life - An expression of resignation. Typically used when something extremely stupid occurs after extensive steps have been taken to avoid it.
  • FU
    1. Fuck You - Very rude insult. Typically used in arguments or in heated dicussions.
    2. Fucked Up - Seriously broken or defective.
    3. Fucked Up - A bad situation.
    1. Fucked Up Beyond All Recognition - When things have gone so completely wrong, you can barely recognize what was originally being attempted.

    1. Good Going - Congratulatory term when someone has accomplished something or that you are pleased with them.

    1. Good to Go - Meaning ready to go, typically used when someone has asked if everyone is ready or to indicate that after a certain event occurs they will be ready.
    2. Got to Go - Used to indicate that one has to leave.
    3. NOTE: These two term can be considered as conflicting - if someone asks "are you ready" and gets "gtg" back - it may be uncertain if the responder is "good to go" or has "got to go"

    1. Congratulations - When even Grats is too long to type

    1. If I Remember Correctly - Used in sentences when posting some bit of information that one is not entirely sure is correct, but one is more sure than unsure. Use of the term is dependant upon one having known the information prior and then forgotten it. If just guessing one would use instead AFAIK.

    1. No Problem - Typically used after being thanked as a gesture of humility, to let the thanker know that it was of minor consequences and no debt of gratitude is necessary.

    1. Oh My God - Expression of surprise or enthusiasm.

    1. On My Way - Used to indicate you are already headed to the place indicated. Often used with or in place of BRT

    1. Own - To beat someone or something completely and soundly, to indicate that there was little challenge offered.

    1. Pain In The Ass - A person, event, occurance, or enemy that difficult or annoying.

    1. Please - A "leet speak" version of "Please", started as a joke variant of "Plz". Now considered to indicate someone attempting to sound "Leet" while obviously not knowing what they're saying, often causing the lister to respond with derision.

    1. Please - When your request for asisstance isn't important enough for a full "Please"

    1. Please - When you're unable to properly spell PLS
    1. Please, Thanks, and Bye - All three words, mashed up in a variant of "Leet Speak". Individually any of those three can be considered to be lazy or poor usage. However, all three mashed up together like that, when used as a request for something, typically indicates someone who wants handouts (free money or gear) and can't make the effort to at least ask nicely let alone earn it themselves.

    1. Pwn - Equivalent to Own, but with more of a online/gamer/leet slant. Originated from a mispelling in the game "Warcraft" with "Player has been Pwned" instead of Player has been Owned"

    1. Rage and Quit - The act of quitting a group, or completely logging out of the game, due to anger. The anger is often directed at team members or other players whom the quitter feels is responsible for whatever it is what went wrong.
    2. Ragequit - Used to ridicule players that leaves or logs off with no comment whatsoever (typically in groups that is struggling with some objective).

    1. Real Life - Used to indicate that something you are talking about is related to a real life event and not an in-game event.

    1. Rolling On the Floor Laughing - Similar to LOL but used to indicate that the comment or occurance was even funny than indicated by LOL

    1. To Be Honest - Used when you are about to say something that may be controversial but you feel should be said.

    1. Too Long; Didn't Read - A response to a long forum post or a long chat text, indicating that there was so much posted (and typically poorly formatted) that the responder didn't bother to read it.
    2. Too Long; Didn't Read - Added to the end of a long forum post, followed by a summary of the content of the post.

    1. Trolling - The act of posting something purely for the purpose of generating an emotional response (promote arguing).
    2. Troll - Someone that posts something provoking on forums or in ingame chat only for the purpose of generating an emotional response (promote arguing).
      • Do Not Feed the Troll - Said to players who are responding to the troll, said as a reminder that such responses is exactly what the "Troll" wants, and ignoring the "Troll" is a better reponse to their actions than actually responding to them.

    1. Welcome Back - Short for "Welcome Back", a greeting used when person returns from AFK, BRB, Bio or any other absence.

  1. Roald Amundsen's nickname/code for Nicolas Belmont ("the wagtail has arrived"), and it was used to address Aveline Belmont as well (she said the email was addressed to wagtail, which she assumed was herself).
