According to Henry Hawthorne, the Kingsmouth Congregational Church is protected by ancient Illuminati wards. Investigate the wards and try to figure out how they work.


Initial Cutscene

Henry Hawthorne: “ Blessed are the meek” - but doubly blessed are those who do the Lord's work, boldly. It is through his grace that we find sanctuary in his house. When his house is besieged by, um, by zombies. Not to belittle the Lord's work, but perhaps, the Illuminated Ones made this place a safe place through some conjuration of theirs. Blessed by the Lord of course. Or at the very least, tolerated. Whatever the providence of our sanctuary, it extends no further than the doorstep. Even the cemetary spills over with the devil's spawn. I've tried prayer, I've tried my .44 but Satan is wearing Kevlar. And bible thumping, eh – just pisses them off.

Journal Entries

  • Tier 1: Test the potency of the wards protecting the church. Draw zombies into the church and observe the results.
    • Draw 5 zombies into church
  • Tier 2: The magic of the wards is strong enough to incinerate the zombies entering the church. Locate the wards and study their imagery.
    • Study the first Illuminati ward
    • Study the second Illuminati ward
    • Study the third Illuminati ward
  • Tier 3: Attempt to duplicate the imagery of the wards on the fence surrounding the graveyard.
    • Draw the first ward on the graveyard fence
  • Tier 4: With the spectre destroyed attempt again to draw the wards on the graveyard fence to see if it has any effect on the zombies.
    • Draw the first ward on the graveyard fence
    • Draw the second ward on the graveyard fence
    • Draw the third ward on the graveyard fence
  • Tier 5: The wards worked temporarily, but keeping them active would require constant surveillance and redrawing of the symbols. Only the wards affecting the inside of the church are permanent.





The wards in the church should hold indefinitely, but will not be easy to duplicate. It is not a question of holiness, but of advanced chaos control and study.

One day, you will master such anima powers and apply them at will. For now, we must make use of what we have.

Your findings show that the church was constructed as a safe haven against precisely this kind of onslaught. It seems the old Illuminati magi - the founders of the town - knew from the very beginning that Kingsmouth is a place of darkness.


The church is an ancient Illuminati safe haven. Don't be fooled by the architecture. It could just as easily have been a gas station or a Denny's.

The wards are a tribute to an older generation of our magi. All shady and all very good at what they did. Your attempts to replicate the symbols were serviceable, but advanced anima mastery requires extensive talent and practice. Frankly, you're not there yet.

Hopefully this inspires you to dig deeper into our roots in Kingsmouth. The traces are all around you.



The Illuminati magi are all revisionists, but every now and then they do get it right. Kingsmouth holds more than its share of Illuminati secrets. Knowing their poor ties to tradition and history, you are as likely to discover these secrets as they are.

The wards in the church are maintained by infused ancient symbols. Your attempts to apply them showed hopeful results, but these things cannot simply be replicated and reproduced.

Advanced anima techniques require ancient foundations and years of accredited study.

There are 5 tiers to this mission

Tier 1/5

  • Draw 5 zombies into church
    • Find any Zombie, or group of Zombies, around the church. Run up to to them to get their attention, then run back into the church while they follow

Tier 2/5

  • Study the first Illuminati ward
    • Just outside the church, on front door frame, at (283, 473)
  • Study the second Illuminati ward
    • On the left or right side of the church, the one on the left is at (278, 455)
  • Study the third Illuminati ward
    • On the back of the church, located at (286, 485)

Tier 3/5

  • Draw the first ward on the graveyard fence
    • Look for a gate in the fence - at (309, 501) or (251,466)
    • When you draw it, you'll be attacked by Unquiet Dead and will have to kill it first

Tier 4/5

  • Draw the first ward on the graveyard fence
    • Since you were interrupted by the Unquiet Dead, you'll have to start over
  • Draw the second ward on the graveyard fence
    • Either at (309,501) or (251, 466) -- whichever one you didn't do first
  • Draw the third ward on the graveyard fence
    • At the back of the graveyard, at (255,530)

Tier 5/5

  • Kill the Vengeful Hulk
    • He'll spawn in the small fenced off area of the graveyard and then come to you
