Dragon.png FROM: The Dragon
To: <Character Name>
SUBJECT: The Shadow
Jung is as deadly as it gets. Don’t believe me? I’m going to tell you a bedtime story. Imagine you’re a goon from the Fear Nothing Foundation. The bosses told you to pick up the big-headed freak kid. Piece of cake. You strut up, towering over the little one sitting on the seesaw (and really, is there anything lonelier than one person sitting on a seesaw?). You kind of enjoy the imbalance of power. You grin. The boy looks up at you with a face a kindergartener should not be able to make. You feel undead moths flutter inside you. You feel transparent. Naked. The stomach dropping sensation that someone knows that secret about you, the one you prayed no one would ever find out, the one that you try to forget, because it shatters the self-image you have of yourself.

“Please, sir, would you do me the kindness of forgetting how to breathe?” Where’d he get that British accent? You try to laugh, but can’t draw in the air. What the $@#%? You try again. Your muscles don’t remember how. Impossible! We’ve all done it at one time or another, when we are alone with our thoughts. We become hyper-aware of our breathing. Each breath becomes a conscious effort. We control how deep, how long. For just a second, we have the fear that if we stop making the effort, we’ll stop breathing and die. But of course, we keep breathing anyway. Except now. The fear’s come true. You fall to your knees. The blood vessels in your head are about to burst. The world turns sideways. And the last thing you see is that little boy staring at you. Staring. Sweet dreams.

Illuminati.png FROM: The Labyrinth
To: <Character Name>
SUBJECT: The Shadow
Reading your report now. Went to terrifyingly psychic little boy...his Shadow was not the Shadow we were looking for...journey of self-discovery...personal details...blah, blah, blah… Alright. That level of self-honesty in an agent makes me go a great big rubbery one. So Jung was a dead end on that particular investigation, but an interesting dead end. Dangerous. Secrets are not safe around him, and we like our secrets safe. We’ll keep our distance, but we’ll be watching. Eyes and pyramids and all that.

Templars.png FROM: Temple Hall
To: <Character Name>
SUBJECT: The Shadow
Sometimes leads do not pan out. When little Jung said "Shadow," he perhaps meant something different from the dream wraith we were hunting. Still, your report is far from dull. Some say that such a level of introspection, for a soldier, is distracting. Others say that such an inward journey only hones one's resolve for the coming war. I will give you the benefit of the doubt and assume the latter.

Jung: Terror is not really about sweating, screaming, or running.
Jung: Those things are incidental.
Jung: Terror, real terror, is having all of our illusions,
Jung: all the ways we like to present ourselves to the world, torn down.
Jung: We have no choice but to see the naked truth of ourselves.
Jung: No one ever likes what they see.
Jung: Are you brave enough to examine yourself that closely, I wonder?
Jung: There is a shared space of thought between humanity.
Jung: The Collective Unconscious.
Jung: It is not theoretical. I have been there.
Jung: It is a metaphor, true, but it is a place where metaphors can cut.
Jung: In that place, there is a shape-shifting pantheon of thought patterns,
Jung: the Jungian archetypes.
Jung: One of those archetypes is the Shadow.
Jung: It dwells in the Collective Unconscious, and it dwells in each of us.
Jung: We do not like to acknowledge it. And that makes it angry sometimes.
Jung: Carl Jung codified this pantheon of archetypes.
Jung: They serve as the many aspects of ourselves.
Jung: Confronting them can increase our capacity for psychological growth.
Jung: In your memories, I see a series of choices.
Jung: Do you understand the ramifications of those choices, I wonder?
Jung: I offer you a chance to explore your past.
Jung: I can take you to that place where archetypes walk and metaphors become solid geometry.
Jung: I suspect that you need to confront your Shadow.
Jung: No thanks required.

Tier 2

Finds room with blackboards
Jung: To defeat one's enemies, one must know the Self. I must have read that somewhere.
Jung: The archetypes might wear familiar faces, but they are all pieces of you.

If player spells "ANIMA" on blackboard:

Jung: According to Carl Jung, in the Collective Unconscious,
Jung: the hidden feminine personality within a male finds expression through anima –
Jung: and the hidden masculine personality within a female finds expression through animus.
Choose your parental status
Jung: Every choice is a door.
Jung: I mislike opening adult doors. Messy, messy creatures.
Jung: Every growing mind needs a guide.
Jung: Our parents, biological or surrogate, are there as observational lessons,
Jung: to teach us right from wrong and the consequences of a life lived poorly.
Jung: Not all people have this advantage. Sometimes accidents happen.
Jung: Did you leave your parents behind, or did they leave you?
Left parents behind
Jung: Your parents or guardians stayed with you, until you left that world behind.
Jung: Interesting. How has that choice affected you?
Jung: Did the mundane give you scope to the fantastic?
Lost parents
Jung: You had no one to watch over you.
Jung: Perhaps you took slivers of mentorship from those you met along the way.
Jung: A difficult road to navigate,
Jung: but perhaps it was easier to dive into the Secret World with so few attachments behind you.
Choose your friend status
Jung: Often, we are defined by those around us. Did you define yourself by the presence of friends or by their absence?
Has friends
Jung: Focus on the good times.
Jung: Focus on the bad.
Jung: See their faces. Hear their voices.
Jung: They were the pantheon of your past.
Jung: You did not walk among friends. Was this by choice
Jung: or were you ostracised? Think back.
Jung: Focus on those quiet nights, when only your shadow accompanied you.
Choose your Romance status
Jung: When you left your mundane life so abruptly, there were casualties.
Jung: A partner or romance that you left behind, perhaps, or simply desires that you discarded for your new existence.
Jung: This is understandable. To achieve individuation, you must remember them. And choose.
Female Partner
Jung: Focus now on the object of your affection. Her voice. Her presence. Let the memory surface.
Male Partner
Jung: Focus now on the object of your affection. His voice. His presence. Let the memory surface.
No Partner
Jung: You chose to walk alone. Yours was a self-reliant, if lonely, path. Focus now on the lessons you learnt, the self-discoveries.
Choose your offspring status
Jung: Children. The biological imperative. Did you sire offspring?
Had children
Jung: They say that to have children is a form of immortality.
Jung: Think of the weight in your arms. Think of the cries in the night.
Jung: What did you pass on into the world?
Jung: Did you choose to have no children, or was that the hand that was dealt to you?
Jung: Is parenthood something you saw in a hypothetical future?
Jung: Think back.
When you catch up to your Shadow
Jung: The Shadow Aspect.
Jung: The archetype is built out of the mad-science-medley of the traits your ego hides from itself.
Jung: A sleight-of-hand show for an audience of one.
Jung: This is the portion of you hidden in the unconscious,
Jung: the part of the iceberg below the water.
Jung: Focus. Let it rise. Let it manifest.
Jung: Interesting. What do you think it says about you, that you gave your Shadow that form?
Random Dialog
Jung: Information is a super-weird substance.
Jung: Individuation is this way.
Jung: Moving on.
Jung: Nostalgia is as heavy as a grain of a neutron star.
Jung: It is my limited experience that regrets for things done are far less heavy than regrets for things left undone.
Closing cutscene
Jung: Sometimes, we feel small and insubstantial.
Jung: Just look into a mirror and remember all the different people you have been.
Jung: All of the different stages of development. Every choice created a new you.
Jung: So many yous.
Jung: You are still all of those people. You have access to all of their gifts and flaws.
Jung: We are, all of us, a legion of archetypes unto ourselves.
Jung: We are a multitude. We have so many dimensions.
Jung: We are never truly alone.
