Mosul the ancient. Mosul the watcher. He absorbs stories the way tree leave soak up the light, the way tree roots drink the dead. He asked you to gather stories, and then he cast a coin into the river. What stories will the babbling water tell you?
Tier 1
Once upon a time, stories made for good currency. Sometimes, currency contains stories.
  • Fetch the coin that Mosul threw away
  • Examine the coin
  • Find the location referenced by the coin
Tier 2
An ancient coin led you on a merry chase. They say it takes two coins in the eyes to get the dead where they're going. You'll just have to go in one coin short.
  • Enter the crypt
  • Search the crypt
  • Examine the book
  • Locate one of the sisters
Tier 3
Children's books are not always child's play. Children remember to fear the dark. Most forget as they grow up. What will you remember in those delightful pages?
  • Examine the children's book
  • Investigate the story of the book
  • Follow the mysterious woman - Timed 02:30
  • Confirm the story of the Padurii
Tier 4
The Padurii has made her kill, just as in the stories. Perhaps her victim holds some clues.
  • Investigate the corpse
  • Throw the eggshells in the river at the correct location
  • Follow the eggshells - Timed 03:00
  • Follow the Blajini
  • Approach the Blajini
  • Examine the egg
Tier 5
You followed the eggshell from life to death and gave the Blajini chase. Bring these tales back to Mosul, and you will live on in story.
  • Return to Mosul
  • Share a story with another Secret Worlder

Walkthrough

There are 5 tiers to this mission.

Tier 1/5

  • Fetch the coin that Mosul threw away
Clue 1
In the cut scene he throws it over the bridge
Solution
West side of the bridge, on the northern bank, at (546,616)
  • You will receive a Coin in your inventory
  • Examine the coin
    • Use the Coin from your inventory
  • Find the location referenced by the coin
Clue 1
The coin reads: Τουτω μεν, óν κóσμος ουκ χώρες νυν τύμβος αρκει
Clue 2
The language is Greek
Clue 3
Google translates it literally as
This hand, ON world is quite a tomb now suffices echores

Which doesn't quite make sense. It is suspected that what the translation is supposed to be is

For him, whom the world could not accommodate, now a tomb
Clue 4
Head to where you can find a tomb
Solution
The tomb you're looking for is a small mausoleum in the Draculesti Graveyard. There is nothing to indicate which one you want, so you have to run around and look for a yellow-outlined object. The one you want is on the west side of the Chapel of the Prince, at (763,567). One of the statues outside the tomb has a helmet you can use

Tier 2/5

  • Enter the crypt
  • Search the crypt
    • There is a yellow-outlined ancient pedestal in front of you as soon as you come down the stairs and a book on an altar at the back of the room
    • The book is held to the table by "Endlessly knotted rope" which you can attack and destroy
    • After you pick up the book, you will receive a Book in your inventory
  • Examine the book
    • Use the Book from your inventory
  • Locate one of the sisters
Clue 1
Make sure you read the book
Solution
The book mentions The Iele, go to her and click on her (885,690)

Tier 3/5

  • Examine the children's book
  • Investigate the story of the book
Transcript

Translation

The mother takes the baby, with a piece of polenta out in the yard. She breaks the polenta in three, and then repeats the chant below three times, each time throwing the forest one piece:

Mother forest I send a sign to you, For my child, I give you bread wrapped in tears, And give to me sleep and rest for my baby, To sleep quietly, And silent as a mouse. As birds sleep in the woods, So my baby will sleep with me.

Clue 1
The pictures are actually more informative than the text
Clue 2
Page 2 is probably meant to be the Tree of Life
Clue 3
Page 4 is a rock in a lake. You've encountered it before if you've done the missions from The Iele
Clue 4
Page 5 shows the dark haired woman standing near a road
Solution
The stones are at (1025,764). To the west of them, you should see a "Romany Man" near (1021,749). As you approach him, a "Mysterious Woman" appears, and will lead you both into the forest.
  • Follow the mysterious woman
    • Timed: 2:30 , but that should be plenty of time, her path avoids mobs
Solution
She leads you and the Romany Man to (1070,663)
  • Confirm the story of the Padurii
    • You will be affected by The Dark Forest's Malaise
    • As you watch, the Mysterious Woman will rip out the heart of the Romany Man. She will take a bite of it, and then she will be transformed into a Fata Padurii

Tier 4/5

  • Investigate the corpse
    • On the ground in front of you
    • You will get a crumpled Romanian note (viewable in your Mission Journal)
    • You will also receive Broken Eggshells in your inventory
  • Throw the eggshells in the river at the correct location
Transcript

Translation

Our mutual siblings in red and blue underestimate the value of Mosul. We shall not make that mistake. There are secrets trapped in his growth rings.

What is it with @#$%!&* kid's books? Thinking of requesting a Spooky Kid's Books division. You wouldn't believe how many mysterious deaths lead back to the children's wing of some old library. Well congratulations. You've furthered relations with Mosul, a contact of questionable relevance. But you never know. I guess it's back to the Mystery Machine with you.

Cautionary tales. Even in this post-modern world, they can still save a life. I am reminded of something G. K. Chesterton once wrote:

"Exactly what the fairy tale does is this: it accustoms him for a series of clear pictures to the idea that these limitless terrors had a limit, that these shapeless enemies have enemies in the knights of God, that there is something in the universe more mystical than darkness, and stronger than strong fear."

We believe dragons exist. The story books teach us that dragons can be beaten. Then we grow up; we learn that dragons do not exist and that the second lesson was the most important-the struggle's the thing. Of course, maturity moves in circles, because then you become a Templar and learn that the dragons do indeed exist.

Dialogue

Introduction

Walking with Player over his bridge
Mosul: So strange, travellers wish to pay toll to cross my bridge. Ha ha!
Mosul: Much mistaken in the telling of that story.
Mosul: It is I who have given the treasures, willingly, yes. Treasure of tales.
Mosul: Gold and amber slip through men's hands, with no value.
Mosul: If man has so much care for sparkling, he should gather the morning dew.
Mosul: It sparkles, every sunrise.
Throws the coin into the river
Mosul: Stories are our life. We exist only for the little time we are spoken of.
Mosul: When the stories are stopped, the sons and daughters of the wild are gone.
Mosul: As we came out of the earth, we have passed back into it.
Mosul: My gift to you is: it will not be so soon you say our farewells.
Mosul: You shall find the hidden names of us. Born from the forest heart.
Mosul: The painted egg, the cut of young men's love.
Mosul: Mosul. Iele. Blajini. Padurii. Huh.
Sighs heavily
Mosul: In a little time, none will be left with these names. Gather them, protect them, take them with you far away.
Mosul: Be the world's memory. That's my treasure.

Other Information

  • This mission is required for the Sherlocked achievement
  • When following the eggshells in the river, make sure you have not turned off any graphics settings via the /setoption command. If in doubt, do "/setoption spellEffect_DisplayLevel 0" to reset it to normal

Trivia

  • Translation of the Ancient Pedestal:
“Three sisters were born,
Blood of the Great,
A treaty was sworn,
To protect them from fate,
Immortal and wild,
And safe from time’s rot,
Their true names kept safe,
By the Gordian’s Knot."
